CESAR NOMINATION FOR BEST FIRST FILM (Zem)
BAD FAITH, the directorial debut from popular actor Roschdy Zem, is an endearing romantic comedy about an illicit inter-faith love.
Thirty-somethings Ismaël (Zem) and Clara (Cecile de France) are a happy couple who think nothing of their ethnic and religious origins, having been together for four years. He teaches at a Paris music conservatory and she’s a physical therapist. One morning, Clara discovers that she’s pregnant, but before telling their parents and making their union official, the couple will find themselves confronted with reticence that will turn the best day of their lives into something else entirely. Ismaël very quickly understands that his Muslim family will accept the circumstances with difficulty, while Clara, believing that her Ashkenaze Jewish parents are open and modern, soon realises they are not at all ready to deal with the situation.
With a generous layer of humour and undeniable charm, BAD FAITH is an intelligent, tender and funny look at what happens when the outside world - politics, tradition, societal prejudices and family - hits the personal: the love between two people.
