CESAR NOMINATION FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (Marchand)
One of the standout films from Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes finds up-and-coming auteur Christophe Honoré letting his hair down. A thoughtful and often ebullient family drama, INSIDE PARIS boasts virtuoso performances from charismatic leads - and heartthrobs du jour - Romain Duris (The Beat My Heart Skipped) and Louis Garrel (The Dreamers), inventively cast against type.
After splitting up with his long-term girlfriend, Paul (Duris) has moved back into the Paris flat that his younger brother Jonathan (Garrel) shares with their over-protective, divorced father (a dryly comic scene-stealing turn by veteran Guy Marchand). Depressed and lethargic, he remains housebound whilst brother Jonathan - a devil-may-care womaniser (and the film’s narrator) - walks the streets of Paris chatting up girls. The emotional interplay heightens with the arrival of the boys’ glamorous mother (Marie-France Pisier).
Essentially a witty and sensitive chamber piece, INSIDE PARIS is consistently entertaining in its stylistic dash, with multiple nods to Truffaut, Godard et al. in their early sixties heyday. Adroitly alternating between the sober and the effervescent, INSIDE PARIS is a chic but substantial pleasure, and a genuine highlight of the Festival.
