THREE CESAR NOMINATIONS!
Best First Film, Actor (Blanc), Original Screenplay
Michel Blanc, one of France’s most beloved actors, stars in screenwriter Isabelle Mergault’s affecting and blackly comic first feature. YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL was the sensation of the French box office in 2006 – the third-most successful local release, and eighth highest grossing film of the year overall - earning over 20 million Euros!
Following the death of his workhorse wife Aymé, Pigrenet (Blanc), a hard-working farmer, finds himself short of hot meals, clean clothes and help around the farm. Since there are few prospects for a wife in the area, he engages a marriage agency to help him. Ever pragmatic, his demands aren’t much: no romance - just someone willing to put up with all the hours of toil. The agency advises him to head to Romania; there, it seems, the situation is so desperate women will do anything to go abroad! Aymé follows the advice, and after a couple of false starts finds Elena (Medeea Marinescu), who seems healthy enough. For her part, Elena is glad she doesn’t find her suitor too attractive.
Director Mergault adopts a light touch here, delicately charting the subtly hilarious relationship between Aymé and Elena. Proudly old fashioned in script and execution, and boasting an unpretentious charm, YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL sparkles with wit and is a handsomely rewarding cinema experience.
